i gutted this vintage IBM 5160 XT computer. and welded in the supports for a micro ATX motherboard, as well as a ton of other case mods to make it work. and converting the old 5¼ floppy drive to a slot-loading dvd burner was the finishing touch to my XT project. i used a slot-loading Panasonic UJ-845 DVD-RAM drive with a “jae to ide adapter”. to make it work on a home computer. i also had to reroute the led and eject button from the DVD to the faceplate of the old floppy drive. lots of work, but I’m very happy with the results.

COOL!
COOL!
I still have to …
I still have to hook my XT up and see if it still works.
i hooked my XT up …
i hooked my XT up last night cause i had nothing better to do, it came on the first time flipped the switch, i had to rewire a 90’s era keyboard to get it to work since the original is gone,
the only thing that didnt work was the floppy drive, and it never worked right to begin with,
the clock battery died, so i removed it,
the computer did crash form the Y2K bug but pulling the clock battery fixed that, even though it now thinks its 01-01-80 all the time :]
my hard drive is fine btw. 20Mb!
Dude, this happened …
Dude, this happened ten years ago and I was only 13 at the time. That computer is long gone now.
Gesh your a …
Gesh your a cheapsake! Your wanting a refund for a 20 year old computer that stopped working!
Your a fool too, because the parts are worth more than you paid for it! (way more!)
Absolutely badass, …
Absolutely badass, great to see a classic piece of hardware getting a new use.
aww i remember …
aww i remember those floppy drives, i’ve still got a load of those 5 1/4 floppy disks around here
“the new old”lol
“the new old”lol
I have a couple of …
I have a couple of original XT keyboards here if you want to buy one. My video card is exactly like yours aside from being able to hook up a light pen.
i actually have 2 …
i actually have 2 color monitors, but im missing the original keyboard, i had the thing taken apart to clean [near impossible] and i had all the parts lined up neatly and was cleaning the board, and the next thing i knew my dad had tossed the whole thing out and i was like SHIIIIII—-
i managed to find a later generic one with an xt switch on the bottom,
the video card in mine also has an output for NTSC video out, and it has a header for a lightpen
the hard disk is in a safe spot.
No shortage of …
No shortage of original IBM XT´s? Maybe where you´re from, but here they are very hard to come by. In 1999, I purchased my first IBM 5160 from an old neighbor of mine for $20.00! After it malfunctioned and I returned it for a refund, I never saw another one again up close until 2006.
I received my IBM …
I received my IBM 5160 for free three years ago with the original IBM 5153 color monitor and XT keyboard! Everything is in immaculate shape! It has been sitting under dust covers for a couple of years. Before the recession began, these computers were worth a lot of money! It´s not a good idea to gut them because they will be valuable again. One word of advice, don´t let your hard drive sit too long. I´m wondering if mine will be any good.
i put my XT away …
i put my XT away for a while, so i pulled the hard disk to store in a safe spot even if it is only 15Mb
XD
i need to back it up just for the sake of posterity, its still got a letter on it my dad sent to some lawyer in 1991 XD
this computer has …
this computer has been used everyday since i upgraded it, opposed to being stored in a closet. like it was from 1990-2006 in it’s original outdated form.
95% of the vintage internals were sold on ebay to people who actually needed them to keep their original IBM XT’s running. so this was truly a win win for everybody. as there is no shortage of of original IBM XT’s
and your point is?
and your point is?
“Microsoft will …
“Microsoft will never make that drive again”
i would never do …
i would never do the because Microsoft will never make that drive again or the disks ever again! the new thing today is a usb flash drive to save files.
I refuse to gut …
I refuse to gut mine until it dies.
That is freaking …
That is freaking AWESOME… old school in appearance but new technology under the skin…Sweet
