Can anyone tell the difference between blu ray and a dvd when played through a playstation 3?

Can anyone actually tell the difference in picture quality between a blu ray and dvd when played through a ps3? Yes, my tv’s are 1080p. Are blu rays just a waste of money? From what I understand the ps3 upconverts regular dvd’s. Thanks
There is a huge difference between blu-ray and dvd when played on a 1080P TV. Blu-ray has 6 times the resolution of DVD, meaning DVD has to be blown up 6 times to fill the same 1080P screen. That results in an image with noticeable pixelization and blurriness, especially compared to blu-ray. All upconverting does is resize the DVD image to fit a 1080P screen, it doesn’t add any detail or increase the resolution of the image at all.
Yes, there will be a difference, and yes, it will be noticeable. An upconverting DVD player will send a 1080p video signal to the TV input, yes, but the signal would need to be converted to 1080p anyway to display on a 1080p HDTV. The theory behind upconverting DVD players is that if this upconversion can be done as close to the original source as possible, then there will be fewer video artifacts and less distortion due to resistance in the AV cable and any other necessary signal conversions that happen from the DVD’s laser to the TV’s video decoder. Either way, you can’t make something out of nothing. DVDs are just 480p. The upconverting taking place in the player will give a slightly better image than a non-upconverting DVD player would give, but it won’t be anything like Blu-Ray.

Upconverting does not make a standard DVD play in 1080p, that is not possible, in fact, I don’t notice a significant difference with DVDs. DVD vs. Blu-ray, is comparable to Casette vs. CD, the difference is amazing. However, you must connect the Blu-Ray player to the TV with a cable that supports that resolution (HDMI or VGA, but VGA would be weird). The PS3 does not come with either of these, they must be purchased separately.
