What is the difference between an internal and external DVD drive?
Filed Under (dvd players) by admin on 07-03-2010
Obviously external is outside the computer but how can I buy an internal DVD Drive and install. Someone please tell me the difference?
The difference I believe you are talking about is that the External Drive is most likely going to use a USB or Firewire connection, which connect via inputs in the back panel or the front panel.
Alternatively, internal drives use either a SATA or IDE connection, which connect to the motherboard more or less directly. Instructions for install can be pretty easily found from your computer maker or the drive maker

Just as in real estate and cinematic production, it’s all about location, location, location.
An internal DVD drive is generally connected to the motherboard via an IDE ribbon cable and is mounted inside the computer’s case.
An external DVD drive is generally connected to the computer via a USB cable and sits on the computer desk (or wherever you choose to put it).

An external DVD drive is an internal DVD drive placed inside an enclosure. An internal DVD drive is placed inside your computer so that the front stick out the front of your computer, but the rest is inside the computer. an internal DVD drive is the kind that all desktops come with when you buy them.

You already know what an external drive is. The internal goes inside your computer box, which requires you to open the chassis and replace the current one.
No difference on how they work. They work the same, but one is outside and other is inside.

internal… the word say it. it is inside your PC. external… same here. it is outside your pc connected with a USB cable and power supply.

An internal DVD drive is housed in the PC and connects directly to your disk controller via internal cables. An external DVD has its own housing, possibly its own power supply, and generally connects via USB, Firewire or some other serial or parallell cable.
For the most part, the two are interchangeable. Aside from portability, the big advantage to the internal drive is the direct connection. An external drive has a uplink (typically USB 2.0), and can be impacted by other peripherals running on the bus.
